Never guess with pool chemistry. Check if it is safe to add or mix chlorine, acid, and balancing chemicals together.
Adding the right chemicals at the wrong time can cause cloudy water, destroy the effectiveness of the product, or create a dangerous physical reaction. Here is how to verify your treatment plan:
Pool chemicals are highly concentrated industrial compounds. When handled individually, they are perfectly safe. When combined improperly, they can cause catastrophic damage to your equipment and your lungs.
The most common and deadly mistake homeowners make is pouring Liquid Chlorine and Muriatic Acid into the pool at the exact same time. When these two mix, they instantly create Chlorine Gas (the same gas used in WWI). If you must add both, add the acid, run the pump for 4 hours, and then add the chlorine.
Not all chlorine is the same. Mixing organic chlorine (like Trichlor pucks) with inorganic chlorine (like Cal-Hypo granular shock) in the same bucket or automatic chlorinator can cause a violent, explosive reaction and a chemical fire. Never put shock in your tablet feeder.
As mentioned above, it creates highly toxic chlorine gas. If you accidentally mix them in a bucket or in your pool's skimmer basket, evacuate the area immediately, ensure pets and children are inside, and contact emergency services if the gas cloud is large or indoors.
As a general rule of thumb, you should wait at least 2 to 4 hours between adding different chemicals to your pool. The pool pump must be running on high speed the entire time. This allows the first chemical to fully circulate, dissolve, and dissipate before the second chemical is introduced.
The safest method is to add chemicals one at a time, pouring them slowly into the deep end of the pool directly in front of a return jet while the pump is running. Never mix chemicals together dry, never mix them in a bucket, and never pour them directly into the skimmer basket (unless specifically instructed by the manufacturer).
